• before you even start! turn off the Tribunal expansion!. You can't handle dark brotherhood assassins for a while. And once you can, their armor is lucrative so you ought to be a good sport and sort all that out.
• spend. your. gold. training is great. Bribing the mage's guild guides is great.
• if you can sleepwalk through a fight with 3 city guards, you are indestructible. Don't even look through clutter at level 20
• lesser soul gems might as well be a backup pool of petty soul gems
• that high elf apothecary in balmora replenishes her mark and recall potions, and while they're a pound each, they're cheaper than scrolls.
• the puzzle canal: you have to be underwater and damage your health below 10. (meaning if you're an argonian who can't drown, you can still manually harm yourself). Also, it's level 3. the book saying it's confusing and dangerous is for bitches, other than the part where you drown yourself I could do the quest IRL)
• peakstar's travel-stained pants mean you are immune to gravity
• caldera (home of Creeper) is an instant mage's guild teleport away from balmora, and then almsivi intervention to get home is free.
• your alchemy gear is heavy
• ebony maces are free (ordinators respawn)
• morag tong is easy mode - walk right up, stab a dude in the face in broad daylight, be showered with money.
• amulet of divine intervention is like 20 gold, I think the imperial chapel at ebonheart has one
• keep on the lookout for ring of toxic cloud. the game seems to not realize how great that is.
• amulet of shadows is available right near ald ruhn
• ald ruhn is a short jog from gnisis
• keep a restore strength potion on you if you plan to investigate graves - bonelords (the dunmeri zombies) might drain you all the way to zero, and yes that means you'll be overencumbered unless you have nothing on you

• the shit is heavy
• there's a master's set in the caldera mage's guild

• feather - heather, scuttle, ruby
• fortify speed - moon sugar and kagouti hide
• fortify intelligence - ash yam, bloat, netch leather
• fortify strength - ash yam, dreugh wax
• levitate - coda flower, racer plumes, trama root
• restore health - saltrice, wickwheat, resin, emerald (this is the only alchemy use of emeralds. eat 'em up or sell them), and a bunch more
• restore magicka - comberry, frost salts, void salts, deadra heart
• telekinesis - bonemeal, alit hide

some of these have high gold value, go ahead and sell them. Some of these are fine to just eat so you can tank the effect and level up your alchemy. But the point is, don't stockpile them for potions.

• rat meat
• kresh fiber
• raw ebony (too heavy)
• scrap metal (ditto)
• ghoul heart - unless you go to mournhold, there are no other ingredients with Fortify Attack
• golden kanet - unless you're going out to pick flowers then immediately teleporting home to sell them
• fire salts - the other atronach seasonings restore magicka
• sload soap
• diamond - if I boost my intelligence to 300 I can still only make an invisibility potion that lasts 9 seconds
• bittergreen petals - see diamond

• petty: skeletons other than champions, shalks
• lesser: wild bull netch
• common: ideally flame atronach (they're 105), but if you don't have a reliable source, the following are all 100: ancestor ghosts, bonelord, corprus stalker, ash slave, ash zombie, scamp, clannfear, dremora
• greater: ogrim (165) but not ogrim titan. ogrim titans are 70. i don't get it either.
• grand: ascended sleeper, golden saint. Yes, ascended sleepers let you make constant effect enchantments - it goes by “soul value”, and the threshold is 400. There's also exactly 1 named dwarven ghost for some telvanni quest. don't bother.
• azura's star: no it isn't a black soul gem. in MW. i think it is in oblivion and skyrim, though.

gotchas: skeleton champions are 200 - a waste of a grand soul gem. Ogrim Titans are a waste of a common. Lesser soul gems fit bull netches and *diseased* rats, but I don't know how to tell on sight. The various “dagoths” are all just wastes of Grand soul gems. (except for Ur, who has no soul. apparently.)
