In General

diverse vegetation. basically everything.

Browse

Woody and stemmy plants such as trees, shrubs, briars, and some vines. High in Fiber.

Forbs

Herbaceous, broad-leaved plants. category is broad as fuck, covers clover, thistle, peas. sources of protein.

Mast

Fruit producing plants

Soft

Starches, sugars, and major vitamins. Apples, berries.

Hard

Carbohydrates. Acorns, hickory nuts.

Misc?

some mushrooms. field and stream, on mushrooms: "It’s a mystery how deer tell the difference between poisonous and non-poisonous varieties, but they apparently do."

Water

Most of deer's water needs are satisfied by the food they eat. They'll hang around water when there's a drought.

CT relevant

  • Ferns - generally uninteresting.
  • Hickory - i'm pretty sure i've seen cracked open hickory nuts
  • Mountain Laurel - recognizable by how it always has gnarled stems - toxic.
  • White Pine - state of michigan says "deer will eat pine before they take other pines"

most of CT is Northeastern Coastal Forest.
