Pressure

look at a map, imagine: what “pushes” a deer out of an area? psychological pressure. Some pressure can go down after a while - give deer a bit of credit, they have long term memory. But whether through forgetting, or feeling that the danger has passed, that pressure may eventually be released. …but depending on the type of pressure, that might mean years later.

Hunting Pressure

most obvious. If a deer thinks there's a predator in the area… bad area, avoid. if that's a travel corridor, maaybe the deer will come back in a week? but if its bedding, he's never coming back. jeff sturgis of WHS would say that if you apply hunting pressure to a food plot, it's fucked for that deer's lifetime - he'll pick a new bedroom to hang out in, but if The Food is no good, better pack up and move.

let's extend this to “predator pressure” - if a deer hears a human, that's an out of place sound, better pack up and bolt. If you're one of these shockingly wealthy hunters which is apparently the norm, and you have a gazillion acres bordering farmland - deer are used to tractors. Tractors take predictable paths at predictable speeds and predictable times. But they're still loud enough to cover other sounds, so it's not like deer completely ignore them.

Doe Pressure

applies to bucks. Remember, a mature buck was raised a bit by his mother, then she exiled him as soon as possible. If he approaches other does, they think he wants to mate, and they bolt.

So imagine them all as diffident nerds. Lots of does around? he hangs back.

Buck Pressure

applies to does. Remember, an adult doe only sees a buck when he's trying to have sex - so if she sees him, she runs.
