• .5x medium orange

  • .75cup water

  • .25 cup turbinado or granulated sugar

  • 20x cloves

  • 2x cinnamon sticks

  • 2x star anise

  • 750mL dry red wine


  • zest orange in wide strips. set aside. Juice orange. set aside.

  • boil sugar into water until dissolved. Reduce heat, add cloves, cinnamon, star anise, orange zest, and orange juice. Simmer until a fragrant syrup forms, about 1 minute.

  • reduce heat further and add wine. Barely simmer for at least 20 minutes, at most a few hours. Don’t let it reach a full simmer.
